Australian White Wine Varieties
When a particular type of wine is mentioned, it can sometimes be identified with a certain country. One excellent example of a variety that is instantly associated with a particular country is the Australian white wine. This particular type of wine can be easily recognized due to its citrus-like scents and flavors. Hints of lemon, orange, or apple can instantly be smelled once you start swirling this beverage in a glass. If it's a more mature variety, the smell and taste can be anything from tropical fruits like mango, melon or pear. Its extensive range of scents, however, may not be limited to just being citrusy as it can also yield odors of nuts, spices and yeast. Among other factors, the scent and flavor can depend on the variety of the grape that is used and the period of fermentation.
There are several excellent types of the Australian white wine. One of the most popular types is the Chardonnay. This timeless grape variety arrived on the shores of the land down under in the late 1920s. In the 70s, it became one of the most widely planted varieties in the country. Its popularity can be attributed to its consistent flavor. Another variety called Riesling is typically produced dry. In wine parlance, the term "dry" is referred to something that has lesser sugar residue after fermentation, hence it is less sweet. The Sauvignon Blanc is fast becoming very popular and is now planted widely in most of the country's vineyards. Its best varieties are produced when the grapes are raised in region that have cool temperatures.
As for varieties of the Australian white wine that are excellent but lesser known, one of them is the Semillon. The renowned Barossa valley is a winemaking region that yields the most luscious grapes which are used to produce this variety. Oftentimes, it is aged in oaks so its color can be deep yellow and has scents of peach and mango. The Pinot Gris is yet another relatively unknown variety but is gaining a lot of following due to its fresh and unwooded style that is suitable to drink during warmer days. If picked late, it can also yield a richer taste. Other white varieties are the Muscat, the Verdelho, the Viognier and the Marsanne. Whatever your choice is, you'll truly enjoy the elegant aromas and flavors of the Australian white wine.
