How can I let my tubes warm up if I don't have a standby mode?
My little all tube amp doesn't have a standby option, I usually turn it on and have the guitar at low volume to let them warm up.
Is this good practice? How long should I wait before I start playing?
Will my tubes burn out faster because I'm lacking standby mode?

Zach- No, I've played for quite a few years but this is my first experiences with tube amps. I have a guy that I have work on my guitars, I'll have to ask him if he can do it for me.
I disagree with Zach. Tubes lose high end and solid bass response as they get older. There is a certain point at which they "burn in" and get to a sweet spot (I think, although many engineers will disagree with me), but past that they'll start to sound a little duller and while nice, won't be *as* nice. This is based on solid physics and (more importantly) personal experience.
Here's the thing - when tubes are turned on all the way, they get full voltage. Standby mode delivers half-voltage, or thereabouts, and so is gentler on the tubes (no cold -> hot -> cold). What I've done with my Epiphone Valve Jr is to simple turn it on and leave it at the lowest volume setting for a little while. It's all i can really do. For me, EL84 tubes don't really have heat impact that a larger tube will have, so they won't be impacted as heavily.
Preamp tubes aren't affected as much as power tubes by usage. Over a few years of heavy usage, yes, they will dull and sound less magical.
Replacing your power tubes will give you the most benefit, although you may need to rebias. Talk to an amp tech first (the mfg?).
But yes, adding a standby switch would be a good thing, it will extend the usable life of your tubes. Make sure to use it for 30 seconds while turning on, and for 30 seconds before turning it all the way off.
