LM386 audio amp DIY help?
Hi, I have found a pair of old speakers from the late 70's rated 8ohm 12 watt.
I would like to build an amplifier circuit to power them using my ipod/computer etc.
I would like to do this using mostly parts I already have.
I have already assembled "Amplifier gain=20"(minimum parts) which can be seen here:

problem is im barley getting 1 watt(using 12VDC power supply)
so when I crank the amp full volume im getting distortion(which i heard is terrible for the speakers)
I would let to get more power out of the amp
my first thought was to run the output of the lm386 into another one, but realized the max input voltage was .4volts
any suggeestions to get more power out of this circuit?? maybe using transistors as amplifiers after the lm386?

You are correct, adding another amplifier gain stage, using power transistors or FET's will give you added gain to your output. The difficulty will be in matching the transistor impedance to the speakers.
You will probably have to add an impedance matching transformer after the power transistor to properly transfer max power.
Your other option is to go with a higher power IC amplifier chip, such as the LM383. Which can provide 7 watts, instead of the 1 watt output of the LM386.
oops .. i see that the LM383 has been discontinued. The suggested replacements for them are the 10W TDA2002 or TDA2003 ICs
