What/how do amp modelers work?
Im curious as to how amp modelers like a pod x3 affect an amp. Does the settings on the pod only play out of an amp or does a combo of the pod and amps settings play out together?
There are different types of modeling/emulation units. Certain units, such as the POD, are software based emulation devices that use sophisticated software to effectively mimic the overall sound architecture of various amp/effects combinations. Other units, like the Tech 21 sans amp pedals, use different combinations of solid state circuitry to actually simulate the circuits of various amplifiers.
Software based devices, like the POD, are better suited to HiFi applications. They work best when run through a very clean signal path such as powered speakers or a power amp/speaker combination. This includes running it direct into a stereo channel on a recording or P.A. console.
Solid state devices, like the Sans amp, work best when run into a standard amplifier. They interact with the amps circuitry to produce an overall tonal characteristic that is a combination of the unit and the amplifier.
Any standard guitar amp will color the sound of a device that is run into it. To effectively limit the amount of coloration that the amp has on a device you can set the amp for an extremely clean setting with a very minimal amount of gain and equalization, or bypass the preamp entirely and run the device straight into the effects return on the amp.
I have used this method very effectively with both units. To do so, run the guitar into the device then take the output of the device and run it into the effects RETURN on the amplifiers effects loop. This is sometimes labeled power amp in, or effects receive. By using this method you are only using the power amp of the guitar amplifier and all of the gain and tone controls are made from the device. Some amps have a master volume control that will allow you to control the amount of signal being fed to the power amp but most amps include this control as part of the preamp stage. Depending on your type of setup you will simply use the master volume on whatever device that you are using to control the overall volume of the output
