Yamaha P95 & Yamaha P85 - Sound And Portability Rolled Into One
For those in the market looking to buy a new digital piano, the Yamaha P95 is a solid contender. Targeted toward the amateur to mid level professional, the P95 is a good overall digital piano suited for both beginners and more advanced players alike. The Yamaha P95 is in fact, the updated model of the Yamaha P85, with the main differences being a higher sound quality and some different voices. The speakers and amp in the piano have also been revamped for the P95.
Both the P95 and P85 feature Yamaha's graded hammer standard (GHS) key touch. The keys are fully weighted and offer graded response. An acoustic piano has a distinct feel, and the graded response helps recreate that feel. In an acoustic piano, the size of the hammers hitting the strings is greater at the low end than at the high end, because the strings at the low end are thicker. This means that notes at the low end of the piano must be struck with greater force than those at the top end. Yamaha's graded hammer standard approximates this phenomenon by providing grater resistance to notes at the bottom end of the piano compared to those at the top end.
The Yamaha P95 is a full size digital piano with full 88 keys, so that any piece in a pianist's repertoire can be played. Despite the full range, the piano is surprisingly lightweight, weighing in at only 25 pounds.
For every note on the piano, 4 velocity layers have been provided. 4 different recordings of every note has been taken to recreate the sound of a piano at 4 distinct velocity levels. More realism is added to the overall sound by having these 4 distinct velocity levels as a different sample can be played based on how hard a note is struck. The velocity at which each sample is played, can also be altered in the settings of the piano. This customizability allow the player to tailor the sound to his or her individual preference.
Both the P85 and the P95 offer 10 voices. However the actual voices between the two are slightly different. The P85 offers the following sounds - 2 types of grand, 2 types of electric piano, 2 pipe organs, 2 harpsichords, strings and vibes. The P95 removes some sounds from this set, whilst adding new ones. The full list of voices in the P95 is as follows: 2 grand pianos, 2 electric pianos, a jazz organ, a pipe organ, harpsichord, strings, choir and vibraphone. The main differences between the two being the addition of jazz organ and choir in the P95.
50 demo songs come as standard with the piano. The majority of the pieces feature the main grand piano voice, however there are a sufficient number of samples featuring the other voices also. With the grand piano voice, some full piano pieces are included from greats like Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin.
Other features include the ability to layer 2 sounds together - dual mode, 4 different reverb effects with customizable settings, and a chorus effect. For quiet late night practice, 2 headphone ports are also included with the ability of the ports to be also used on an external amp. Midi composers will be happy that a standard Midi port is offered, along with a jack for a sustain pedal.
Overall, the Yamaha P-95 and Yamaha P-85 contain all the features that the casual pianist would want whilst being portable enough to take anywhere. The sound quality, touch response and overall look of the piano make it a good contender with other digital pianos in its price range.
