Tremolo Arm (Whammy Bar) Hard Rock/Metal Tricks?
I am an experianced player (not advanced or pro, but i know a bunch on the guitar), and I purchased an Ibanez RG120, and just picked up the tremolo arm for it. Hearing bands like The Showdown, ect., there are many squeals, and whammy bar shrieks (similar to dimebag's technique). What are some exercises to get you an avid player using them, such as in soloing (van halen type guitar stuff). The only things I have found out on the tremolo, is the dive-bombing, and holding down the whammy bar, plucking a harmonic, and pulling the bar up, making a shriek. Are there any other brutal sounding tricks for it? And how can I practice soloing, and using the bar at once? Thanks in advance.
I'm not too experienced in guitar with tremolo but i do know a few tricks.
If your bar is removable, then try sliding it across your strings, perpendicular to the strings, to get a PAC-man effect. If you move it back and forth across the guitar, parallel to the strings you get the PAC-man ghost sound.
If its not removable, try turning the volume on the guitar off and playing any note on or above the 12th fret on the highest 3 strings. Then turn the volume up and pull on your bar, you should hear and elephant sound.
My last "trick", start a solo with a long held note at the end. Once you pluck that note don't bend the string but lift your guitar by the bar into the air to get a nice "weighted" effect.
With soloing, try keeping the bar in your hand while you solo. Work on that. Then try pulling or pushing the bar on longer notes in the solo to get used to the feeling. Finally try to pull or push the bar on the shorter notes while playing. It may sound easy but it gets hard when the notes are short and fast.
