A Peek in the Life and Works of Spain’s Legendary Painter, Diego Velasquez

Of all the world-popular Spanish artists, there is one who stood out during the Golden Age of the country when plenty of painters were also making their legacy on the world. This artist became respected and popular in many parts of the world and could be regarded as one of the most famous if not the most famous Spanish painters of all time—Diego Velasquez. Velasquez could be acknowledged as Spain’s most well-known and well-respected painters who has created many notable and admirable paintings.
Coming from minor nobility, Diego Velasquez was born in Seville in June 5, 1599 and he was the first child of six children. Quite amazingly, he was able to initiate his lessons with Francisco Pacheco at the age of eleven; Pacheco was also considered as a master painter and he helped develop Diego Velasquez to become a certified painter at a very young age. He then became the husband of the daughter of Pacheco and Velasquez made paintings of religious themes and tavern pieces, which is immensely revered by a lot of people, and with all the earnings he saved, he got a good house for them and another house to be rented out.
Diego Velasquez continued his painting career and painted a lot of astonishing pieces; he became famous and even the country’s most influential celebrity. When he met Marques de Spinola, Velasquez painted a masterpiece called Surrender of Breda which tells the victory of Spinola; when Spinola saw the piece, he was stricken with awe and amazement and cannot contemplate how brilliant was Velasquez’ talent to express and capture emotions through the realism of his portraits. However, The Surrender of Breda, as good as it is, will not be Velasquez’ greatest artwork that has been talked, discussed and being learned through out time; Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour is the masterpiece that is acknowledged as the most viewed painting in the world and because of its fame, even people who does not know much about painting knows Diego Velasquez and his Las Meninas.
