Ash Body
Ash or Alder?????????
I am looking at buying a Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster, and I have the choice of getting an alder body or an ash body. The ash is more expensive, but I am wondering if it really is better. What are the differences between these two? Ex. the sustain, tone, etc.

Ahhh... one of my fave subjects. Body woods. I wish players would pay more atention to the single most important component of their guitar...
Alder – Rich and full, Alder is strong in the lower midrange. It's not as hard to get as ash or mahogany, so it's the most common quality wood for 3-pickup single-coils (after the cheap chinese basswood and agathis junk guitars that the kids like nowadays). Alder is medium to light in weight and takes well to sunbursts and other finishes better than ash. If you want a pretty finish, get alder. It is sweeter and more diffused than ash, so you get a warmer midrange tone than ash. If you're going to get a rosewood fretboard, make sure you're gettin an alder or mahogany body.
Ash – Popular in the 50's, this wood is alive and lightweight. Ash is a little dryer and just wants to vibrate. It will have more "attack" than alder, and will have slightly more highs and lows (less mids) than Alder. Very bright in tone. If you're going to get an ash Strat, you have to get a one-piece maple neck. Rosewood fingerboard on Ash body will give too much sizzle. I would only build such combination if you are positive that you want a super trebly blaster. Ash bodies look really good with a natural finish instead of painted. Lots of people think that ash Strats sound a lot like Telecasters.
