Active and Passive pickups on a home-built bass?
Hi, I'm building my own bass and I want to build a cross between a musicman stingray and a fender precision bass. The pickups I want to use for the Humbucker are the Seymore Duncan Basslines (for stingray) and the p-bass pickups would naturally be standard fender pickups (single coil). I also want to be able to switch between either of them or use all three, similar to what guitars use in their switching systems. So, my question is: Is this possible?
Anything is possible. You just need the pickups, the holes for the pickups and the appropriate switch to toggle between them or select both. I have always wondered what the uniqueness of a bass with three pickups might be. The big decision would be what pickups do you mount where and why? There would be good reason to mount any of them in any position but, what you intend for it sound like should be the determining factor there. So, your biggest decision might actually be where to mount the single coils or humbucker (bridge or neck)??? Consider also that most bass guitars do not really have neck pickups. They tend to be either mounded in the center or near the bridge. Apparently the neck position would be too mellow for most bass players.
