Compressor Sustainer
What's the best way to chain my guitar pedals in perfect sequence? ?
I have all pedals by boss.... tuner, wah pedal, overdrive, distortion, flanger, chorus, pitch shifter, Compressor/sustainer, volume and expression deal and delay. If you could guide Ike in the correct sequence and which pedals need to go in the loop station would be massively appreciated. Cheers
First off, go ahead and experiment! See how different pedals affect things. It doesn't take much experimentation to figure out that delay or reverb BEFORE distortion sounds terrible. You can learn a lot if you just trust yourself.
I'll tell you what _I_ would do though.
guitar -> tuner -> wah -> OD/distortion -> compressor -> chorus/flanger/phaser -> delay -> volume
Most people would recommend putting the compressor BEFORE the distortion. I don't like that. It makes every note sound the same... which I guess some people like, but I think it just makes things sound boring. Putting the compressor after the distortion can even things out a little bit. Allowing you to use the volume control on your guitar to make subtle adjustments to the amount of distortion you're getting. It can also subtly balance out the loudness while retaining your pick dynamics. Basically, it emulates a good tube amp.
Another thing about compressors... they ARE NOT magical sustain boxes. I don't know why they market them as "sustainers". That's stupid. No pedal can make your strings physically vibrate longer. A compressor makes everything the same volume. It does so by turning down the loud parts then turning everything back up again. That's why they bring out all those little noises like pick attacks and stuff. It doesn't give you any more sustain than you would get by gradually turning up the volume on your guitar as the note dies away (which sounds WAY more musical and interesting btw... one of the many secrets of Jeff Beck and Carlos Santana). A good guitarist can keep that note ringing with a strong vibrato.
So if you're using a compressor to get extra sustain, you're basically just trying to hide the fact that you suck... which is made more obvious by your lifeless tone.
