How do guitar cabinets work?

That is not exactly my question but I have a digital multi effects pedal that I don't really like but it was cheap which worked at the time, and I am trying to make the best out of it.
Anyways it has a "cab" setting which I realize means cabinet but it has setting that I am lost for.
The only setting are different types or sizes of cabs I am assuming, like 1x10 or 4x12C and bunch of things in between.
I mostly want to know how the different cabinets are suppose to affect my tone.
I will mess around to find what I like but I would rather not go into that blindly.

The numbers like 1x10 and 4x12 refer to the type of speakers that are in the cabinet you are trying to emulate. 1x10 would be a single 10" speaker. 4x12 would be four 12" speakers.....quite a large cabinet. Quite often you'll see 4x10 which is the configuration of the classic Fender Super Reverb combo amp.

As you might imagine, the same amp played through different speaker configurations would sound differently. I would expect a single 10" speaker to be bright and break up early. In my opinion 4x10 is an ideal cab for guitar because it's bright but handles the power. Larger speakers will handle lower frequencies better, and won't break up (distort) so soon. I have to assume that your amp's "cab" settings attempt to emulate these qualities.
