What kind of electric guitar should I buy?
I've been learning for a little while now on an acoustic. I figure in a little bit I'll be ready to invest in an electric.
Just a little background: I'm really into the whole 80's alternative rock sound. My favourite rock bands are Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine. Because of that I really want a Fender Jazzmaster or Jaguar.
So question is how do the Jazzmaster and the Jaguar compare to eachother, and how do they compare to something more standard like a Stratocaster?
Hi! The choice of guitars always comes down to finding the sound, playability, and appearance you seek, and with the three guitars you reference there are substantial differences. The Jazzmaster and Jaguar each have very distinctive tones; of the two, the Jaguar has more on-board tonal flexibility. The main significant difference between them is the scale length; the Jazzmaster is 25 ¾ (same as the Stratocaster), whereas the Jaguar is a very short 24 inch. Players with big fingers may have difficulty fretting this model; however, for pure sex appeal the Jaguar definitely shines! Unfortunately, there is much less overall ability to customize the tone by selecting from various pickup options on these two guitars, whereas with the Stratocaster you would have many choices. The Jazzmaster and Jaguar also use a completely unique floating bridge arrangement, which has the nasty habit of allowing the strings to slip slightly out of intonation with heavy whammy bar use.
