Looking for a Wireless Guitar System for Guitar - Is this any good?
Hi, I'm looking for a wireless guitar system so I can gig without the fear of tripping over my lead. I own the Samson Airline for Strats (AF1). I got this one because at the time of purchase, I owned a Gibson Les Paul. The AF1 will fit into the 1/4" Strat plug and the Gibson-style plugs. It isn't vise-versa. The AG1 is angled and will not fit into a Strat. So, just a warning.
The system itself was dubbed the best invention in wireless technology at the time of production in 2000 or so. I still own mine today and for what it is, haven't been neither blown away nor unhappy with it.
In 2003, I was playing with the Gibson and set it down on the ground with the transmitter still in. Well, the plastic casing that surrounds the battery and circuits snapped off, leaving the plug stuck in to my guitar and infuriating me. $180 later, I got a new transmitter from Musicians Friend.com. With the same frequency, mind you. (It won't work if the transmitter and receiver frequencies are not the same)
The sound quality and range surprises me sometimes, good and bad. I've walked outside and down the road before with my amp turned towards my window and it received perfectly. I've also been on-stage, walked 25 feet away from the receiver and the sound blanked out for 0.5s on and off until I walked back to a closer range. More good than bad, but just a word to the wise. I assume that no wireless technology is going to be flawless so given that, I would still endorse it.
*Adapter for receiver is 12V (not included)
**Receive can run on a 9V battery and will give about 12 hours of continuous power.
***Transmitter runs on AAA.
