A Good Guitar Will Help You to Learn
I'm a keen amateur musician, playing guitar for over thirty years. In recent years I've gotten more into music production using computers but my first love is really the guitar.
As a keen guitarist I have a growing collection of guitars both old and new. By far my favourite guitar is my 1931 National Triolian. The paintwork on the body is almost all chipped off and there are deeply worn grooves in the fret-board where many fingers have held the same chords and played the same notes over and over again. But all I need to do is strum a chord and slide up the neck with my bottleneck and I am in the Delta with Robert Johnson looking over my shoulder.
But this fantastic vintage instrument would have been way out of my price range when I was first learning to play. In those days all I could do was dream of owning a Fender Stratocaster or Gibson Les Paul. The Tokai and Squier guitars started to appear in the music equipment stores. These guitars were affordably priced copies of popular Fenders and Gibsons. I managed to scrape together enough money to buy myself a nice black Squier Telecaster that was just brilliant to play. A guitar playing friend once told me that a good guitar can nearly play itself and this is almost true.
My Squier Telecaster served me well for many years when I played out in several blues bands. Then I managed to save enough to buy a genuine Fender Stratocaster. But, to be totally honest, I preferred my old Squier telecaster which I'd sold to a friend.
There aren't many young people who have the cash to buy a top of the range guitar. Luckily these days there are plenty of alternatives many of which are equally as good as the guitars they are copying. Epiiphone, for example, is just one excellent manufacturer who makes great guitars that play beautifully and don't cost a fortune.
For anyone looking for a first guitar I strongly recommend that you get the best that you can afford. There are some stores that offer some great deals so look out for these as they can save you a fortune. Also, do consider buying second hand as you can often find a really good guitar that has been set up brilliantly for a fraction of what it would cost to buy new. Shopping around for the best deal is always a good idea and try to take a guitar playing friend along when you are ready to check out some guitars. And its really worth remembering that a good guitar really can inspire you to play more and make playing much more enjoyable.
