What is the difference between preamp tubes and power tubes?

I am looking for a 100w guitar amp combo that can be saturated at a low volume. I am currently looking at a hybrid Vox vt100. It has one preamp tube and the rest is solid state. Will this amp have a very good tube sound? or will it sound real solid state. Bottom line, what qualities do hybrid amps have over solid states?

preamp tubes "shape" the sound. These are the tubes that shape the tone of your guitar sound. Power tubes simply amplify the signal (ie make it louder). The power tubes will add a bit to the overall sound, but that's not their main purpose.

I've used both hybrid and all tube amps, and you won't get a full tube sound out of a hybrid, but with a bit of experimentation, you should be able to get a pretty good sound out of a hybrid.

I'm not sure of your budget, but if you can, I would recommend getting an all tube amp, and an attenuator. The attenuator goes in the effects loop, and allows you to put the volume on the amp to full (thus, fully saturating the tubes), but without the high volume. The attenuator acts as the master volume (you can get an attenuator on eBay for $10-$20)
