Guitar Bass Neck

Question about guitar/bass neck finishes?

I'm just wondering what kind of finish are on certain guitar brands and what they're called...for future reference in case the neck finish is listed on the guitars specs
LIke on Fenders and Gibsons/Epiphones there are glossy finishes and on more metal style guitars like Ibanez and Schecter the necks feel more natural I guess?
I'm wondering because I really like the sound of Fenders and how they feel standing up but I hate the feel of a glossy neck so if I bought a Fender could I sand it down or something to make it feel different?

The "glossy" finish you refer to is typically a polyurethane or nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

The "natural" finish is typically a Tung oil finish.

It's not that uncommon for players to sand down a lacquer finish so that they fell the bare wood. Play a guitar long enough, and it happens on it's own.

It you do decide to sand down the back of the neck, you do need to protect the wood with a Tung oil finish (it's available in the paint department of any home improvement store).
