Guitar Multi
should i get a guitar multi effects pedal board or get single pedals and put them on a pedal board?
Here are the factors you'll want to consider.
Style(s) of music you play. Effects laden styles will be easier on a multi-effects pedal. If effects are pretty minimal best to keep it simple and use stomp boxes.
How many genres you play. A good Blues distortion is usually not what you want for Metal and Metal chorus isn't going to cut it playing Classic Rock and so on. The more genres you play the easier it will be to use a multi-effects pedal. You can customize banks for specific genres, songs and sets. If your only playing one genre and want to create a distinct sound that is all your own it's probably easier to use stomp boxes as it will keep your sound simpler.
The primary advantages of multi-effects pedals is the wide array of effects, the ability to have 30+ programmed sounds that you can quickly and easily switch between. Even if it's just the same effect but up slightly in volume for the solo, one quick foot switch and your there.
Multi-effects pedals have ins and outs allowing you to save off settings, trade settings with fellow musicians, interact with computers, easy to record, built in noise gates and such.
They give you a wider range of sound live. Face it dancing around on all those stomp boxes is too much of a pain. Bending down to change your depth on an effect box between songs too much of a pain.
Stomp boxes give you a purer sound. The distortions in particuler tend to be better from a stomp box. Using stomp boxes you simplify your effects. Realistically your going to have 4 maybe 5 tops and use maybe 2 of them on almost every song.
Stomp boxes are easier to replace. Your distortion pedal goes out no prob get a new one. Your multi-effects pedal goes out it's like you lost your sound. All those years of work building those sounds now you have to start over. Even if you can find the exact same model you still have to upload or reprogram all your sounds back into the effects pedal.
Me personally I use multi-effects pedals. I play multiple genres and both bass and guitar. I recently added the Pod X3 to my arsonal as I can use it for both bass and guitar which is a huge plus for me. I'd have to limit the kinds of things I do if I used stomp boxes as it'd be impossible to reproduce live on stomp boxes and once I program a bank for a song(s) it's done. No more fiddling. I just step on that bank and I'm there going from maybe a really heavy distortion to a really phantasmic sound in a split second. I'm not worrying about replacing 9 volts or whether individual pedals are working. For me multi-effects pedals really expanded what I could and do accomplish with a guitar.
