So, You Want to be a Guitar Player?
Maybe you are a Guitar Hero game player, but now you think you want to learn to play a real guitar? Guitar Hero is a fun game to play, but it won't help you learn to be a true guitar player. You might be thinking you would like to become a guitar player and get that same rush by playing the guitar or performing in a band.
Learning to play an instrument takes work – you don’t really get to “play” at it until you learn the basics and practice. When you learn a song, it gets more and more fun - when you learn two songs, it's double the fun. I know because that is how it was for me when I was ten years old and I started taking guitar lessons! I first learned three basic chords that could be used to play a variety of easy guitar songs. Starting learning some of the basics and you'll feel more and more like you are accomplishing your goal. Learning a few chords will help you a lot - try learning G, D, and C chords to start. You'll find that those three chords will allow you to play many easy guitar songs.
Online videos teach you various things such as tuning the guitar and changing strings (and look up the parts of the guitar – it’s good to learn that). There are beginner lessons on videos that can teach about guitar chords.
How hard is it to learn a song?
When I learned to play guitar, I had a guitar teacher - and guitar books taught me songs and chords. But that was before the Internet (I know - a long time ago) and today there are so many other options to find guitar lessons for beginners. I've seen some good online guitar lessons. Some things never change - learning an easy song is a quick way to get started. After you learn one song, you'll learn the next few songs faster and easier!
What should you look for in a guitar?
You can take guitar lessons with acoustic guitars or a classical guitar. Here is an article that shows the three main types of guitars. A difference between classical, acoustic and electric guitars is the kind of strings on them - electric and acoustic use steel strings while classical or folk guitars have nylon strings. Believe me, the nylon strings are much easier to start out with because they don’t hurt your fingers as much!
There are benefits to learning to play on either kind of guitar. Starting with an electric guitar is important if you plan to play in a rock band. For some kinds of music, an acoustic guitar is better, you’ll just have to decide what kind of music you want to play and get the guitar that is best for it.
Buy an averaged priced guitar (really cheap ones aren't good to buy). Make sure you hear the guitar played first. If you have to get someone in the guitar store to play it, then do that. Or take a friend with you that knows about guitars. Then, start learning your first song. You can go from a game player to a real guitar player - and a true guitar hero!
