Guitar Practice Amplifier
How Can I Amplify My Vocals?
I am an aspiring musician who knows a little about these kinds of things. Recording, mixing, etc. But I have been using a basic guitar practice amplifier with my microphone up to this point. Now that I've got my live band's full line up, I need something louder to keep up. I think I need a speaker or two, a mixer, and... Well I don't really know. Can someone fill me in on what I'm going to need for practice and gigging? (Vocal amplification in general, I suppose) Thanks a lot.
You need a PA system and a vocal processor to do things correctly. I suggest you start off small and get a used PA system just to amplify your voice during practice. You won't need a big one, just a decent one that'll be loud enough to match or exceed the volume of your bandmates. Most venues you'll play will already have a PA, so you won't need to bring one. I don't think you'll really need a mixer if you buy the right kind of PA. Many PA's already have a mixer of some kind built into them.
On to the vocal processor. To get a professional sound you'll need one to get compression, reverb and delay for vocals. Most musicians and most new singers don't know that there is compression, reverb and delay on professional vocals. The settings used a usually very subtle, but make a HUGE difference with regard to how your voice sounds and projects. There are a lot of different kinds of processors you can buy. I recommend you look for a rack unit of some kind. If that is too expensive, you might want to look into the new pedal based vocal processors. Just be sure to get something that will get you compression, reverb and delay. They are vital to getting a good sound.
I don't know what kind of microphone you are using, but I recomend you have a Shure dynamic microphone of some kind. They have a really good boomy mid range which is where most human hearing is. If you're using something really really cheap right now and want to eventually upgrade. I suggest you look for a used Shure Unisphere 565SD, a Shure SM58 or a Beta 58. I recomend you look for the Shure Unisphere though, it's similar to the 58s, but it's a superior design with a better sound. It's from the 60s and sometimes you can find them for about 30 bucks because people don't know what they are anymore.
