Guitar Rosette
How do I inlay fine lines?
I have been looking at various guitar rosettes (the design around the sound hole) for a few days before I make this design I have been wanting to try. I came across an artist by the name of Ray Kraut who has some of the coolest inlays I have seen. I have designed my own inlay that are similar to his, but am dumbfounded as to how he inlays such fine black lines into such a fragile sitka spruce top that is only millimeters thick. Anyone have any idea how he does this? I'm thinking it may be like darkened scribe lines or scrimshaw or something.
You can find many books on this subject.
In general there are different techniques for making different kinds of inlays. From the photographs of this artist's shop you can see he uses end mills to create the grooves for his inlays. To make the shape desired the end mill is put in a router which is guided by a template. The thin strip of wood used can be a purchased veneer or you can make your own veneer by soaking the wood and using a slitting saw in a horizontal mill.
To make a patterned veneer you lay veneers of different colors on top of each other with a glue to bind them, then cut the pattern off from the end. Checkerboards can be made by doing this process twice: first you make several striped veneers as above, then lay those veneers together with glue to create the checker veneer.
When a veneer needs to be laid around a circular hole (a "rosette") you can make a strip and then soak then to bend them around a form. When they dry the veneer will be in a circle. Alternatively you can cut the circle out of wood directly by using a punch or a scroll saw or circle cutting fixture. A wooden ring can be finished to an exact thickness by using two cylindrical sanders set the right distance apart. The ring is guided through the sanders at the proper angle by using capstans that hold the ring in a fixed position so it can only turn in a perfect circle. To keep a thin ring rigid during this process freeze it.
