Guitar String, Custom Gauges?
I want to buy some guitar strings gauges: .012 .016 .020 .030 .040 .064 - But I don't know where to buy them from. Do I need to buy the strings separately or do they sell them in a pack. If neither will I need to go to a music shop, and request the required gauges?
You can custom order them, but you can also buy them separately from most guitar shops. If you do so, however, the quality of the strings may vary, depending on which mfg the strings come from.
You will need to adjust your action and intonation if you go up to this size of string. If you don't know how to do it, talk to a guitar tech. You may need to have the truss rod adjusted, due to that much extra pull from the strings. If you don't do any of this, your guitar may not play correctly, may buzz, and may get a little bent out of shape. (pun? hmm...)
64 is bloody big. Have you considered the possibility that it may not even fit your guitar? You will have to raise the action a LOT to make sure it won't buzz. You will have to adjust the intonation, and almost certainly the truss rod.
A buddy of mine bought a pack of Zakk Wyld strings a while back to put on his Ibanez... then found out that the low E string wouldn't fit in the nut. Rather than have it routed out to make it work, he went with a smaller gauge. Nothing special about the Zakk Wylde set except a monster E strings.
Honestly, you don't need a low E string that big unless you're tuning down to C... and probably not even then! I would think that the hassles of making it work (avoiding buzzing frets which kills tone and sustain, having to file the nut, etc) might be a little too much to consider. Remember that when you file your nut you can't unfile it for a smaller gauge....
I popped over to a few different companies and I couldn't find a single 64. Does that tell you anything? Elixir has a 68 in a set... meant for a baritone guitar (ie, meant to be tuned down).
Most of the sets went no bigger than 58.... And those were on a 7-string set!
I dunno. After a lot of thought about it I don't think I'd get a string that big unless my guitar was meant to handle that kind of tension.... I know mine isn't... and I'd hate to file my guitar nut down, find out I didn't like it, then have to replace the nut to go back to a lighter gauge...
