Listening Is The Key To Learn How To Play The Guitar By Ear
To begin with, you should already know the basic chords, and how to tune your guitar. Make sure you listen to a lot of guitar music. Pick a recording with clear guitar sound to learn how to play guitar by ear.
Tune your guitar with an tuner, piano, or harmonica. Use standard tuning, as this will be what is heard on most recordings. From the largest, to the smallest string, the strings should be tuned to E, A, D, G, B, and E. For some recordings, the artist may have all the strings tuned one note lower. You'll find this on AC/DC and Stevie Ray Vaughan, for example. All you have to do listen to the first note the bass plays on the song. Find a chord on you guitar in which the lowest note is within a couple of frets of that bass note. Then, tune the guitar to make that note of the chord match the note in the recording. Next, tune the rest of the guitar in the normal way, using that string as a reference.
The next step is to find your key. That first note of the bass in the recording is the root note. The key of the song has the same name as that note. Play the major and a minor chord. Whichever one sounds like it fits, is the 1st or tonic chord of the song.
Count 5 notes, starting with the tonic chord, to find the 5th chord. For example, if the tonic chord was E, count E, F, G, A, B. B is the 5th chord, also called the dominant chord. The 5th is always major.
Next, find the 4th chord in the same manner. For the key of E major, the 4th chord is A major. In minor keys, the 4th is a minor chord. The 4th chord is the subdominant chord.
Always remember that the tonic chord is the most important chord in any song. Everything in the song is centered around this 1st chord. In Western tonal music, changing from the 5th to the 1st chord is a fundamental movement. This chord change happens at the end of most songs, and also at key places in a song. It often appears at the end of a verse or chorus. Also, the 5th chord is often in the 7 form. In the key of G major, for example, the 5th chord will often be played as D7 rather than just D.
Many things may happen before the 5 to 1 change. A basic pattern is 1-4-5-1. You hear something like this a lot in country and rock, usually as 1-4-1-5-1. Jazz songs may use a basic theme of 2-5-1. This 2nd chord, the supertonic chord, is minor for a jazz song in a major key.
Another important chord in rock and pop songs is the 6th chord, also called the submediant. In a song in a major key, the 6th chord is often the first chord in a bridge. It can also be used in other verses or choruses.
Experiment with some recordings so you can see the different patterns, and some variations. If you stick with one artist for a while, you will often see that he or she uses the same patterns in a lot of songs. Being familiar with an artists favorite patterns makes it easier to figure out their songs.
Try this stuff. You will start enjoying yourself almost immediately. The more you do it, the easier it will be to learn new songs. Trying different styles will make you even better. After a couple of months, you will be proficient at simple songs. After a few years, you will be confident about learning most songs you hear.
