The Garden Route Of The South African Southern Cape Area - A Wonderland Of Beaches And Forests.
If you are ever lucky enough to be able to bring a visit to the Garden Route in South Africa, you are in for a real treat. Kilometers of white sandy beaches on one side, flanked by mountains and rain forests on the other side make for a holiday paradise. The route starts in the west at Mossel Bay and ends at the Tsitsikamma rain forest near Plettenberg Bay in the east.
If you arrive from Cape Town's side, the first town you will encounter is Mossel Bay. This old town with its many colonial buildings has a different atmosphere than the more modern towns to the east. It used to be the least developed of the Garden Route towns, but during the past two decades it has started to develop into a tourist town of note. The standards of hotels and guest houses are high - we noticed that our guest house even had baby bath tubs for those traveling with infants.
Further east you find the beautiful towns of Groot Brak River and Klein Brak River, both popular resort towns drawing thousands of South African holidaymakers during the peak December/January tourist season. When the Northern hemisphere is groaning under a blanket of snow, it's of course summer in South Africa. This fact makes it an ideal winter holiday spot for Europeans.
Sixty kilometers east of Mossel Bay you will pass the commercial hub of the Garden Route. George has many good restaurants, shopping malls and cinemas. This is where holidaymakers come to stock up on beer, movies and groceries. Twenty kilos east of George you'll find the well-known seaside resort town of Wilderness. It's trademark wide, sandy beaches and may restaurants draw thousands of tourists every year. I once spent a lovely evening at one of these restaurants where they had live music and the leader of the band had a martin acoustic electric guitar, just like my own back home!
Once you leave Wilderness, the road meanders through a series of green hills with the occasional glimpse of the sapphire blue Indian Ocean in the distance. The town of Sedgefield is in an area with numerous stunning lakes and is therefore equally popular with tourists. Our guide book mentioned that there's a fine costume jewelry wholesale distributor in town, but we couldn't find it.
The beautiful historic resort of Knysna is located sixty kilometers from George. Strictly speaking it's not a seaside resort (it's on the shores of a lagoon), but the southern part of town, called The Heads, does overlook the sea. This has become a tourist town per excellence over the past few decades. There are more restaurants per capita than in any other town on the Garden Route.
Plettenberg Bay is the last town of the Garden Route. This is a hangout for the rich and famous. There are numerous upmarket guest houses and hotels and the residential area called Millionaire's Mile is exactly that - a residential area for millionaires. Not far from town you can visit another famous tourist spot - the Tsitsikamma rain forest. In this lush oasis of ferns and waterfalls, you might even run into a real elephant: there are still a few of them wandering around.
