Matched Power Tubes
I need help selecting power tubes for my guitar amp!?
My amp is a Peavey Valveking 100 head. The manual specifies "6L6GC" tubes. I was considering purchasing a matched set of these tubes: http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/ElectroHarmonix-6L6-Matched-Power-Tubes?sku=210090
My question is, do the last two letters (other than the 6L6) refer to some type of specification, or is that simply a proprietary model number? I believe the ones at the link are "6L6EH" which led me to believe it was, since those tubes are manufactured by Electro-Harmonix. My amp does not require bias adjustment that I'm aware of. If I just buy any matched set of power tubes that begin with "6L6," will I be okay? Thanks in advance!
a 6L6 is a tubular metal tube. a 6L6GT is a glass envelope tube, but it is a large envelope and won't fit in compact equipment designed for a 6L6. the 6L6GA/GB/GC are glass envelope tubes, but the glass is tubular so it will fit in compact equipment. the A/B/C are variant that incorporate improvements from the basic 6L6 which was designed in the 1930s. The matched set will work in the 6L6GC circuit. The bias ordinarily does not vary significantly between tubes, however a matched pair should be used in the output stage to minimize cross-over distortion. The tweaking of bias is done by rockers to increase the tube's output distortion to get a grundge sound, its not done to straight amps.
