Can I bring a guitar back from the US to Australia?
Hi everyone,
In October i will be traveling from where I live in Australia, to New York in America.
I am a big guitar player, and a musical nut. Guitar prices are usually dramatically cheaper in the US than here in Australia, and the strength of the Australian dollar means i will get more in USD for my dollar.
I would like to know if it is possible for me to purchase a guitar while in America, and bring it back to Australia. I am flying via delta airlines, and their policy on carry on baggage is that you get to carry on one personal item+one or two other items, or something of the likes. Their web site states that they will allow musical instruments as carry on, providing it is not oversize.
I was wondering, has anyone had any experience with something like this? is there any duties or tax that i will be forced to pay while passing through customs on the way back?

Yes, it should not be a problem. I would recommend that you buy a sturdy case for it as well and then check it as baggage. Make sure to put a "FRAGILE" sticker on it (usually available at the counter when you check your baggage). In my travels I have seen many people check guitar cases as baggage.
