Can a potentiometer control the speed of my fans?

On hand I have some 600-ohm linear taper potentiometers.
will this work?
What about one potentiometer for multiple fans?
I should also add, that these are Sunon axial pc style fans, and my goal is to splice a potentiometer into the hot wire to adjust the current going to the fans. I just want to be sure this is safe as far as a fire hazard and be sure that I won't just be burning out potentiometers and fan motors
Well the regulator in some fans are actually potentiometer . It is the amount of current that is responsible for the speed of fan(motor).
