Replacement Guitar Pickup
replacement guitar pickups?
im pretty sure i am about to get my stock pickups changed. I use passive humbucking pickups and i would like to know if i go to guitar center how much will they cost to be changed(not counting price of pickups). and how long it will take. Also any suggestions. I play 80s rock to Thrash metal. And a a kind of progressive shred.
Your exact pickup choice will probably depend on your guitar, I guess, but if you're interested in active pickups, I'd suggest either the EMG 81/85's or Seymour Duncan Blackouts. The Blackouts have more bass response (and so more chunk) while the EMGs have ... well, think Metallica.
If you're still willing to consider passives, consider coupling passive pickups with an onboard preamp. This can be a very good combination - a hotter tone, with the higher quality/complexity of tone that passives can provide.
Me personally, I'm really big on Alnico pups... I like warm, middy, chime-y tones, and I'm totally in love with the Seymour Duncan pups I got recently... an Alternative 8 in the bridge and Alnico II Pro's in the neck. The Alt 8 is very high output but still has a lot of clarity and warmth, while the A2P's... well, think Slash, like "Sweet Child o' Mine" intro riff kinda thing. Great bell-like lead tones. Love it.
For your style, you might want to look into DiMarzio pups, though. The PAF Joe would probably suit you for the neck pickup (very round, slightly compressed), with maybe a D Sonic or D Alternative in the bridge... the "D" pickups are known for their higher output yet still have good clarity, even with drop tunings.
My tech (not a Guitar Center tech) charges me between 40-60$ depending on how much work needs to be done. I took apart one of my guitars, completely stripped it, had an attack of apathy, then took it in and asked him to put it back together, install new pickups, new strings, and set it up... came out to about 300$, with about 200$ of that being pickups and strings. Took him a couple of days to get it done.

Check out YouTube for sound clips! If you can't find any of the Alternative 8, then look for clips of the JB... the Alt 8 is basically the JB with a little higher output and a tighter low end, better for chugging.
