The design of the Xbox 360 is the primary reason that these problems often reveal themselves in such short order. These Xbox 360 problems are known by its designer and because of that the warranty was extended to three years. There is a seal on the inside of the console which you will see when you remove the faceplate. If that seal is broken the warranty is voided.
However, even if that seal is broken you have other avenues that you can pursue to get your Xbox 360 fixed. So, do not sweat it if it is. You just will not be able to send it back to Microsoft to get fixed.
So if your seal is in place, go ahead and call Microsoft and see if your console is still under warranty. That number is 1-800-4MY-XBOX. They will be able to tell you if you can get it fixed for free. red light fix
After you do that you will have to send it in and it will probably take about 4 to 6 weeks. If they tell you that your Xbox 360 is not under warranty you are probably looking at paying them $100 to $140 to get it fixed by them. That does not include shipping.
The good news is, if you are even the least bit handy with some basic tools you can fix the Xbox 360 yourself. You need to remember that if your Xbox is under warranty and you attempt to fix it yourself the warranty will be voided. As long as you understand that, fixing your Xbox 360 problems is actually pretty easy. It really only requires that you can follow some basic directions and take your time in the process. If you can operate a small screw driver and cresent wrench you can rid your Xbox 360 of the Red Rind of Death.
You should be aware that 6 to 8 percent of the Xbox 360's that experience the Red Ring of Death are not repairable. All in all though your chances are pretty good that you will be able to fix it yourself.
The primary reason for the Red Ring of Death is overheating. You have to be careful that you are not contributing to this problem by blocking the venting. Make sure you place the console where it can get plenty of ventilation. Like all computers the Xbox 360 generates heat and a lot of it. Especially if you end up gaming for a while. As you have probably noticed the Xbox 360 console is pretty small. This is another reason for the overheating. All of the components are crammed into this little space which increases the likelyhood of it overheating.
Luckily this problem can be solved very easily. You need to be careful of some of the free fixes available on the internet. Some can even be dangerous.
I strongly recommend against the towel trick. This fix is not really a fix at all. It causes your game console to reset but in reality the core problem still exists. Most Xbox 360s that I can't fix have used the towel trick. Don't do it.
Also do not place bags of ice of frozen vegetables on your Xbox 360. It may cause condensation to build up inside the console itself possibly leading to an electrical short. Again, do not do this.
Use good judgment when thinking about any fixes presented on the internet. There are some good instructions available out there. One in particular is the X-Clamp fix. fix my xbox asap And it is FREE!
Now that you have a basic understanding of what causes your Xbox 360 problems you are ready to fix the problem yourself. It is very cheap and I do mean very cheap. The instructions are free and there are kits on eBay which basically consist of screws, washers and thermal paste.
