Roller Bridge
Which is better for an arch top guitar, a roller bridge or a wooden bridge?
I just recently purchased an archtop guitar, to relearn jazz, and I'm looking for the smooth mid-range wooden sound. The guitar came equipted with a roller bridge. But I think a new wood bridge may improve the sound-any thoughts/suggestions?

As it turns out, the tone of the guitar can't be substantially changed with a different bridge. The tone of the guitar is due mostly to it's construction and wood. A particular guitar will have a specific tone. But you can make some changes (but it will still be the basic sound of the guitar with changes - like the way tone controls change how much bass and treble you get but can't change a trumpet sound into a clarinet)
But I would definitely go with a wooden one. It's give a smoother, more original jazz box sound.
I think a big part of the arch top sound is in the decay of the original attack of the note. A solid, metal connection to the string is going to give more af a consistant, sustaining note (like a Les Paul). A wooden connection is going to have the original amplitude (attack) that decays a lot at first (milliseconds) then hangs on with a softer decay after that.
The biggest tone improvement I have experienced for my hollow body is by going thicker on the strings - at least to 12s.
You need that extra mass of the string to impart the vibrational energy into the wood of the guitar so you can get the real tonal effect of the guitar itself. So when you hit the strings, the guitar resonates. If you have 9s on there, they're too wimpy. The guitar might as well be a solid piece of wood.
Is your archtop electric? If so, get P-90s or big single coils to replace the humbuckers. Single coil pick ups get more dynamics and are more sensitive to the subtle tonal differences in how you play the strings. Humbuckers kinda smooth out (compress) everything - including the tone, they just have a lot more output.
