Both Sides Now $60 This is the untold story of a generation that experienced one of the most extraordinary chapters in our nation's historyschool desegregation. Many have attempted to define desegregation, which peaked in the late 1970s, as either a success or a failure; surprisingly few have examined the experiences of the students who lived though it. Featuring the voices of blacks, whites, and Latinos who graduated in 1980 from racially diverse schools, Both Sides Now offers a powerful firsthand account of how desegregation affected studentsduring high school and later in life. Their stories, set in a rich social and historical context, underscore the manifold benefits of school desegregation while providing an essential perspective on the current backlash against it. |

B-Sides (1996-2006) $14.99 Following 2003's Covers and 2004's hits collection Once More with Feeling, Euro-American trio Placebo's back catalog is raided yet again on this rather comprehensive compilation of the B-sides recorded during their ten-year spell with Virgin Records. Starting with their faithful cover version of Syd Barrett's "Dark Globe" (from the 1996 single "36 Degrees") and finishing with the orchestral mini-rock opera of "Lazarus" (from the 2006 single "Meds"), this chronologically compiled release features 25 of the tracks (plus three other compositions) that appeared on their mammoth ten-disc The Hut Recordings box set, allowing the more casual fan access to their trove of undiscovered songs. Using the concept of the B-side to experiment with their sound, there are several instrumentals that wildly deviate from their trademark angst-rock, such as the claustrophobic Massive Attack-esque trip-hop of "Ion," the improvisational avant-garde jazz of "Aardvark" (which sees Brian Molko unexpectedly pick up the sax), and the appropriately titled Prodigy-style electroclash of "Dub Psychosis," while the eerie electronica of "Leeloo" and steel guitar-laden atmospherics of "The Innocence of the Sleep" suggest that a future scoring David Lynch-esque films isn't out of the question. On the vocal tracks, there are attempts at Chemical Brothers-ish big beat on "Uneedmemorethanineedu," which renders Molko's distinct vocals unrecognizable thanks to its low-pitch distortion, ethereal Americana on "Bubblegun," and melancholic post-rock on "Drink You Pretty," while Placebo display both their acoustic sensibilities on the stripped-back "Then the Clouds Will Open for Me" and "Eyesight to the Blind" and their unique sense of humor on the risqu? Gallic lounge-pop of "Mars Landing Party" and the alternative James Bond theme "Miss Moneypenny." The sheer amount of songs on B-Sides (1996-2006) may be a little too overwhelming for anyone other than hardcore fans, but overall, it's a hugely inventive if slightly inconsistent affair that is well worth persevering with. ~ Jon O'Brien |

Taking Sides - (Ws) $24.99 Set in Germany in 1946, Taking Sides tells the story of the investigation of Wilhelm Furtw?ngler (Stellan Skarsg?rd), the renowned conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic orchestras, by the American occupying army. Major Steve Arnold (Harvey Keitel) has been told by his superiors that they want Furtw?ngler convicted of being a willing participant in the crimes of the Hitler regime, by virtue of his supposed support for and support from the Hitler government. They haven't got the time or resources to go after every ex-Nazi, so they want Furtw?ngler, as the biggest cultural target they can hit. Arnold does his loud, boorish best to first humiliate and then attack the conductor over the supposed favoritism that he was shown by Hitler, Goering, Himmler, et al. and his conducting of a concert at the 1934 Nuremberg rally and at Hitler's 53rd birthday. Arnold finds, to his eventual distress but not dissuasion, that nothing is as simple as he would like to make it. His civilian secretary, Emmi Straube (Birgit Minichmayr), a concentration camp survivor whose father was part of the German Army plot to kill Hitler, and Lt. David Wills (Moritz Bleibtreu), a German-born Jew representing the War Crimes Tribunal, keep trying to remind Arnold that life and politics in Germany only deteriorated gradually after 1933, and in ways that couldn't always be anticipated by those who were there. Germans who chose not to leave weren't necessarily casting their lot with Hitler, but with protecting what was decent or even great about Germany, including her orchestras and music. Arnold knows nothing about music and even less about Germany and her people, and won't be deterred from his goal. Wills and Straube wish to resign from working with him, until they realize that they're facing the same choice that Furtw?ngler faced -- to leave a horrendous situation and have no way of affecting its conduct or outcome, or remain and do their best to stand up for decency and truth. In the process of doing that, they find out that Furtw?ngler is not only a great artist -- which they knew already -- but a great and brave man, who also has his flaws. The latter include an outsized ego that may have caused him to participate a little too willingly at times in the dangerous game he played of maintaining the excellence of Germany's musical institutions while protecting them (and also many musicians) from the worst ravages of the Nazi regime, at the same time also keeping lesser, more compliant figures from usurping his control. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi |
