Do I need to humidify my new Martin guitar?
My Martin guitar is the dcx1e solid spruce top model, is it necessary to use a humidifier to prevent damage to the wood?
Unless you live in the tropics or in a rain forest (or somewhere where the humidity never drops below 50%) the answer is YES. Martin's DX models with solid tops are particularly susceptible to damage due to insufficient humidity. The HPL (high pressure laminate, sort of like formica) back and sides do not move like wood, so if it gets dry the top shrinks and can literally get torn apart by the rigid sides. They're good guitars, but I've seen this happen to a couple of instruments purchased from the music store where I work.
If you live in the north, winters can be particularly bad for dryness, especially if you have forced air heat. If you live in a desert or arid mountain region you've got double trouble. But humidifiers are cheap. A basic Humitron snake costs around eight bucks or less. You may have to refill it everyday if its really dry. I use an Oasis humidifier, which last quite a bit longer. Also, remember your guitar and the humidifier must be in a case to do any good. Otherwise you're essentially trying to humidify the whole room with a tiny little sponge. The other alternative is to get a room humidifier, which might benefit you as well, if you're sensitive to dry air.
