Libbey Glass: As A Famous Manufacturing Accomplishment
Two hundred years ago, breaking a goblet meant that a replacement had to be found. They were all handmade at that time, and the search could be expensive and time-consuming. The situation is obviously different today, because mass-produced stemware or tumbler sets are available in a variety of stores, and are comparatively low-cost. Libby glass helped pioneer this kind of container manufacturing, and is still a major producer.
Its history is interwoven with the American industrial revolution, back to a time when it was the New England Glass Company and the maker of many kinds of household items, such as water pitchers. An employee there held a patent on the production of glassware using red lead. In those days, holding the patent meant that no other company could use the exact same technology, which frustrated the competition.
Any kind of lead, of course, is toxic. Using it in the manufacturing process inevitably gave workers more exposure than necessary, and would not be permitted under today's employee safety and health laws. In those days, however, New England management liked the look this process gave its product, and hesitated to switch to a different process. Other makers, trying to find an acceptable process that did not use lead, came up the lime-soda formula. It was actually invented by a former worker, and radically changed the way silicon-based products were routinely made.
The basic concept is still in use today to make a variety of containers, including jars, bottles, and tableware, and is even used in the production of windows. The New England management staunchly refused to adopt it, and only hard financial times and declining business revenue forced a change. The company was ready to cease production altogether until members of the Libbey family saved it from oblivion, and renamed it for themselves.
Even with all the technological advances that had already taken place, these products were still manufactured in a painstaking fashion well into the twentieth century. That changed, however, during the 1940s. World War II brought changes to nearly every form of manufacturing, including the production of consumer tableware. The end of that conflict also meant an end to resource shortages, and mass production of many consumer items exploded.
These were the years when the machine-made boxed "tumbler sets" were introduced, and the public loved them. Not only were the tumblers popular, but newly styled wine goblets, pitchers, and formal drink-ware sales also increased substantially. With growing balance sheets, Libbey branched out. Previously, the emphasis had been primarily on production for hotels and restaurants, but post-war consumer spending habits encouraged production of products for the home dining room.
With several locations within the United States and other western hemisphere countries, the company has a visible international presence in China today. There have been bumps in the economic road, and the current worldwide economic downturn has affected businesses everywhere. The company has endured, however, and continues to make container and dining products for cooking, baking and a host of other kitchen-related needs.
Today's version of Libbey glass is modern, technologically advanced, and environmentally involved. It has invoked a "lean manufacturing" policy designed to reduce industrial waste while encouraging growth. Long-gone is a reliance on toxic chemicals such as lead, and taking that place is a host of "green" ideas. One idea has been brought to fruition by the establishment of a recycling program for water, oil, paper and cardboard waste, discarded steel and iron, and even computer components for products such as water pitchers.
