Standard Picks
How good is it to learn standard picking on a guitar and get to intermediate level?
My teacher said for the past 1 year he's been teaching me standard picking.
doesn't that mean that I will be limited to only rock music or are there good things about it?
obviously he doesn't know fingerstyle at all.
You need to get a basic understanding of music theory first before learning different picking styles. It's easier to learn with a pick, for the most part, although that's up for debate and depends on the guitar player.
Once you've learned how to play guitar, changing styles won't be quite a pain in the butt. It's better to learn one style first, then move on. The style you learn, is the style that you envision yourself playing more often than the other styles.
And no, using a pick doesn't limit you to only rock music. And it's not obvious to me that he "doesn't" know it. He might not know it, but even so, it's not hard to teach, because it's more about learning the theory right now, and getting your picking hand in sync with your fretting hand.
