Tube Guitar Combo
Is amp modaling REALLY good? Or bad?
I am thinking about buying a Peavey Vyper Tube 60, which is basically a modeling amp.
Would it be better if i just bought the Peavey 6505

And then bought some effects pedals to go with it? I mean c,mon, i don't really know but to me, there is no way an amp that is at a lower price has all these stomp box effects, and that they sound better then real stomp boxes. I mean they might but, it kinda sounds to good to be true.
So my question is, should i buy a real tube amp, or a modeling tube amp?
Well, first off, the Peavey Vyper has a lack of low end, so you'll never get a nice clean sound out of it.
Some of the distortions are nice.
Second, the controls are a bit much for me, I already have a degree and don't need another in Peavey.
If you play live, you will need a footpedal to switch settings. Yes, Peavey has one for like $99.
Let me say something about modeling. If your trying to record a particular sound, perhaps you are a cover band or something, then fine. And, if you have some control over your sound live, fine. But most people go from beer joint to beer joint and the best is to simply have the cleanest, nicest sound possible.
Also, if you do modeling, and really want to make, say a Dire Straits or Harrison lead one time and a nu Metal the next, you'll have to have a zillion presets for all the different songs, and then on top of it all you will need to vary the presents for rythem/lead/wah or whatever. Well, good luck to you and I hope you want to spend all your time tweaking.
I think the real reason people by 'modeling' amps and effects is because they figure there's got to be at least one distortion that sounds good. Well, that's often a looser bet! On the other hand, if you buy various distortion pedals, you can try them, get rid of the one you don't want, and your not stuck with whatever multi-effects or modelling amp. Also, it's a bit easier to turn on and off pedals on the ground than work a multi-effects pedal.
I compromised and bought a clean amp with the Vot Tonelab ST - which is a small multi-effects pedal.
It also has a little tube in it.
As to tubes in general, well that is another debate. I have played tube amps I liked, and tube amps I don't like. I think I like my cheap Crate amp, but I am not a metal head. Might want to look at your favorite guitarist and see what he uses. There's a lot of metal bands that use transistors.
