The pros and cons of pianos and keyboards
For those who're considering which instrument they should buy, but dont know the differences bewteen a grand piano and a keyboard, heres a list of pros and cons- starting with the keyboard.
The 3 main types of piano are the grand piano, the upright piano and the electronic pianos. A grand (or concert) piano's size ranges from 2m-3m for a parlor grand, to 1m-2m for a boudoir grand and slightly smaller for a baby piano. The pianos size really is an issue which you dont really have to deal with when owning a keyboard. Unless you have money and room in your house for them, owning a grand piano isnt really option, as even the baby grand is quite big. But the advangtage with the size is the sound. With lower harmonics and frequencies, the grand piano has its praises sung due to its size, which allows for longer strings that contrbiute to the monsterous sound. Similar to the principals of a bass guitar, the baby grand piano has thicker strings to maintain the tension to keep the sound quality. The thicker strings on a smaller instrument give it more tension so the sound clarity remains.
The upright piano, known as the vertical piano has the frame and the strings contained horizontally within the piano, giving it a smaller size. But, even with that size reduction it still dominates the room.
The electric Piano has been about since the 1980s, which uses digital techonology to reporduce the sound of each piano note. For all the wonders of modern technology, it cant replicate the sound of an acoustic piano. Not favoured by many serious piano players.
And the triats of a digital keyboard?
Keyboards are gonna be far easier to carry around, store in your home and cheaper to boot, all good so far right? A keyboard's sound quality with never match the sound or thrill quality of a piano, but then both instruments are different animals- the pedal that piano has on the bottom can change frequency and pitch of a note, which the keyboard lacks. Money-wise the keybaord is far cheaper, a high grade keyboard costing about the same as a low grade grand piano.
If you have the money and the room to contain the beast, go for a piano, your ears will thank you, but get a good keyboard and you cant really go wrong.
