Volume Tone Knobs
several questions about homemade electric guitars?
I'll start off by saying I am trying to make a miniature electric guitar using scrap wood and guitar parts I plan to buy:
1. I have a mini guitar body that I based of my bass guitar. The size is a ratio of 1 in to 1 cm. It's roughly 9 x 5 inches without counting the neck. Is there a pickup that could fit on a body like that?
2. Can pickups work with only one pickup or does there have to be at least two for them to work properly?
3.(If the answer to 2 was yes...) Is it possible to link the pickup directly to a cable input without going through any volume/tone knobs?
4.(If the answer to 3 is yes...) Where might I find a diagram of something like this?
Just for the record, i have built rough acoustic guitars out of wood before, and also i made an electric guitar using a kit i bought so i do know a little about the topic. It would be an enormous help if somebody could help me with this. thank you in advance.

I take it you intend to play this small sized guitar you are building.
1. Pickups could be a problem. If this small guitar is going to be a regular 6 string guitar, you may have problems with the string spacing on the pickup(s) unless you use a regular width neck. In that case the pickups will work, but your neck is going to be out of proportion to your body. You can avoid the string spacing issue by using a rail pickup. Rails do not use poles and therefore, you have no problem with the poles not being centered under your strings.
If this is going to be a pass guitar, that may be more of a problem. I am not familar with rail style pickups for bass. So you may have the string spacing issue. I think some active pickups use a set up similar to the rails, but I doubt if you want to spring for the price of active pickups in this project.
As for what pickups will fit, that depends on if you want scaled down in size pickups. I do not know of any. If you want full sized pickups then any would work if you get the string spacing issue resolved.
2. If this is a 6 string guitar, you can use only one pickup. If it is a bass guitar, you can use only one pickup if you can find a pickup that hands all four strings.
3. Yes, you can wire the guitar any way you want. Volume and tone pots are not vital.
4. Not sure why you need a wiring diagram if there are no pots or switches. You just run the hot wire from the pickup to the hot side of the jack and the ground wire of the pickup to the ground side of the jack.
One issue you did not mention is pickup location. There is a lot involved in deciding where to place the pickup on the body. That deals with scale length and frequency vibrations. I have not studied electronics and cannot help you with it. I just know enough to be aware of the issue. There are dead spots and you do not want your pickup located under one of those.
One alternative you might consider for the pickups is to use a pickup for an acoustic. Some of those are smaller and may fit better than regular electric guitar pickups. However, the style that have built in pre-amps are probably too large for your needs. You should stay away from that latter type.
