cherry wood guitar body?
im thinking about building a guitar and i found a guitar cherry wood blank online for a good price. is it a good idea to make an electric guitar out of cherry wood. Is there a better wood for guitar building that isnt too expensive. like a around 20 or 30 bucks idk

You raise an interesting question. I had not seen a guitar with a cherry body and wondered what the tonal qualities of that wood would be. Did some reading. It has mixed reviews. Some folks think it is good and others do not like it. None of those speakers said anything about their qualifications as a luthier. So I really do not know the answer.
Seagull uses a layer of cherry in their laminates for the sides of their acoustic guitars. However, I do not know why or what the cherry adds or subtracts from the tone. I know there are drums made from cherry. One thing to note is that there is something called African Cherry which is different from the american black cherry. I do not know which is being used by Seagull or in the drums.
Cherry is hard to work. It is a dense hardwood. Rough on your tools. Burns easily as you work it. However, vintage black cherry is very pretty. Heavy.
If you want to experiment and check the tonal qualities of cherry, then try it. If you are not in the experimental mood, then go with one of the better known tone woods for bodies, such as maple, mahogany, alder, popular, or ash. I am assuming you are building a solid body guitar and not an accoustic. Maple, alder, popular and ash are all commonly used for bodies because they are readily available and inexpensive.
Another option you might consider if you find cherry attractive is a cherry cap over a base of one of the other tone woods.
